CLASSES

MMA

The sport of MMA has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. The MMA of today is a sophisticated blend of many skills that includes striking, wrestling and grappling. Learning to feel comfortable at each distance is just as important as knowing the difference between a high and low elbow guillotine, or a thumb up uppercut and an overhand right.

At PUMMA Tweed we have coaches that can take you to what ever level you want to achieve. Maybe you just want to dip your toes in the water and develop some fitness and some self-defence skills, or maybe you want to have a crack at being a pro fighter? Either way why not invest in yourself and train with people that have been working in this environment since MMA first burst onto the main stage over 25 years ago.

MMA Elements:                       Mondays 5.30pm to 6.30pm

MMA Elements:                       Wednesdays 5.30pm to 6.30pm

BJJ

PUMMA Tweed is Tweed Heads first BJJ academy. We have been coaching BJJ to the local community since 2008. We have a very clear BJJ lineage through John Will (one of the first 12 non – Brazilian BJJ black belts in the world) and Rigan Machado, who still holds the record for the most ever consecutive BJJ win in competition. Head coach Adrian received his BJJ blackbelt 8 years ago and our gym has produced several of its own Blackbelts over the years.

BJJ is a ground-based fighting system that involves controlling and submitting your opponent without resorting to strikes. Some people describe it as “a great work out”, while others call it a “human chess match”.

The BJJ uniform (also called a Gi) is just another tool that helps get better at what we do. It creates, friction, hand holds and levers which help us sweep, choke and submit our opponents in any number of ways. Some people create their whole game around the grips that the Gi provides. Techniques like spider guard, and various loop chokes are all reliant on the Gi to work.

NoGi describes training in just shorts and a tight-fitting shirt. This reduces the hand holds and tends to be a faster more dynamic and entertaining game to watch. Whichever style you prefer, training both makes you are more well rounded martial arts athlete.

However you describe it, it’s a very functional martial art and whole lot of fun. We have evening classes and day classes to suit you.

BJJ BEGINNERS

When you first start BJJ there are so many disjointed techniques and pieces of the puzzle that it’s often easy to get lost and not see your own progression. Most people agree that after about 3 months of training, you begin to see the pattern and feel like you know what you are doing. In the beginner’s class, you won’t learn how to do an inverted triangle choke from worm guard, but you will learn fundamental techniques that will serve you well as a white belt and as a black belt regardless of how your Jiu Jitsu develops for you. This class isn’t just for the beginners though, don’t be surprised if the motivated coloured belts show up. They are there for the same reason you are. They want to learn what really works. And in case you were wondering, a ‘gi’ is simply a martial arts uniform.

BJJ Beginners – Gi:    Wednesdays 6.30pm to 7.30pm

SKILLZ AND DRILLZ

It’s not easy to walk into a BJJ or MMA gym and start training with people who have been practising for years. That’s why we developed the Skillz and Drillz class. It allows you to practice and master the movement patterns and techniques that make up BJJ in a friendly, non-competitive environment. It’s a great way for beginners to build the confidence and skills so they can enjoy sparring, but also a great place for more senior students to drill down on the details and technical aspects of the game that will help them with their progression.

BJJ Skillz & Drillz:    Tuesdays 5.30pm to 6.30pm

OPEN MAT

Friday night open mat is a tradition. It is a great way to round out your week and get rid of all your tension and worry from a long week at work. Most of the time we just wrestle NoGi BJJ for a whole hour. No rest, no techniques demonstrated, just an hour of fun. If you want to come in and do some boxing or kick boxing rounds you can prearrange it with your teammates, or just hope someone else is keen on the night to play. You can also just come in for a chat, to lift heavy things, or to stretch and work on your recovery. If we have comps or fights coming up, we may work some stand up to the ground or wrestling as well.

Open Mat is an open invitation to anyone no matter where you train to come in and have some fun. No politics, no hassle just fun wrasslin. We just ask that non members bring a towel wear a rashie, bring a good friendly attitude and a $10 mat fee.

Friday Night Open Mat:    Fridays 5.30pm to 6.30pm

MMA KIDS "Mountain Lions"

Our Kids MMA classes for 5 – 11 year olds are designed to get your child moving, developing confidence, focus and coordination and having fun with their friends in a safe environment.

We teach important values like discipline, focus, respect and resilience. Our classes are engaging and structured so that your child has the opportunity to acquire a variety of skills. The techniques we teach are based on the principles of boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and we focus on the aspects of movement and control that will create transferable skills for any other sport your child may pursue in the future.

Classes are held on a large open area of Olympic standard judo mats. Our smaller class sizes create an opportunity for each child to receive individualised attention from our experienced coaches, so that learning and development can occur at a much faster rate.

Our coaches are experienced, professional and will help your child to develop new skills and abilities that he or she has probably never thought of trying before. Trying and failing and trying again is an important part of growing up, and having a safe environment to learn this resilience is a vital aspect of childhood development.
The best way to find out about what we do is bring your child down to meet our great bunch of Mountain lions and let him or her join in on the fun. We won’t do a hard sell, we don’t have lock in contracts or cancellation fees, and we don’t charge extra for gradings. There is an inside seating area for parents to sit and watch their child participate in classes.

We provide a safe environment of fun and learning for your child to start their martial arts journey.
